Clifton was born and raised in the northeast corner of Montana on his grandfather's homestead. His formal education started in a one-room country school in rural Montana and ended at Colorado State University's vet school where he emerged in 1979 with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.
Clifton took his degree home, married the love of his life from Washington, and started practicing medicine and raising a family. Clifton and Karla have three sons and a daughter - Landon, Seth, Zech, and Ariel. In 1985 the Berglees bought Clifton's 10,000-acre family ranch and went to raising dryland wheat and registered cattle. Clifton developed an extensive cattle operation, branching out into North and South Dakota and Wyoming.
Other interests include co-founding a youth camp on Fort Peck Lake and serving on its governing board for 16 years. Clifton and Karla homeschooled their children and helped them with their 4-H projects - horses, hogs, steers, heifers, sheep, pheasants, rabbits, and even the dog! Family members have successfully archery hunted in Canada, Alaska, and South Africa. One son won two National Collegiate Pistol Championships for Ohio State.
